For more information on Midwest Academy, please fill out the Teenpaths Info Request Form.
Midwest Academy is a specialty boarding school designed for boys and girls ages 13-17 yrs. who are struggling in their home, school, or community.

The Program is a powerfully impacting intervention that includes an effective behavior modification program with a structured daily schedule, a series of highly motivational emotional growth seminars & workshops called "TASKS," a progressive academic program, and daily personal development & emotional growth courses.

Midwest Academy located just north of Keokuk, Iowa, provides a great location. It is only a few-hour drive from many major cities in the Central United States. Rich in history, culture and natural beauty, Keokuk boasts exceptional infrastructure, healthcare facilities, neighborhoods, entertainment and recreational options for the entire Tri-State area. Keokuk owes most of its growth and past to the Mississippi River. Today about 11,000 call this beautiful city home. Visitors remark on the beauty and friendliness of the people in this area. Interestingly enough, Iowa sets many standards in education and personal growth. Keokuk, Iowa was named in honor of the Sauk/Fox chief, and is a place of great history and bright future. It is considered "Americas Heartland" where values and the importance of family are still paramount.

Behavioral Modification
High standards exist. Inappropriate behavior is confronted, consequences are assessed, and the behavior is re-directed. Appropriate behavior is re-enforced and rewarded. A merit system is used requiring each teen to earn various levels of status and privileges through a structured program.

Academics Midwest Academy has a progressive academic program. Students can complete courses on an accelerated basis. The curriculum is individualized and competency based, allowing students to work at their own pace and to maximize the learning process. Students are not held back by other teens in the class, lesson plans, teachers' schedules, course offerings, or class availability.

Each student is assessed upon admission and then assisted in designing their specific course of study. The teens are tutored by a teacher and in some cases can complete courses on an accelerated basis. The setting and environment provides an excellent opportunity for students to develop character and excel academically, while growing to their maximum potential.

Emotional Growth Courses

Ongoing Emotional Growth and Personal Development Courses are an important part of the overall program. These courses effectively utilize resources such as: audio & videotapes, selective reading material, and group feedback sessions.

TASKS (Teen Accountability, Self-Esteem and Keys to Success)

Students participate in a series of seminars designed specifically for Midwest Academy. During the TASKS seminars & workshops, they work on specific issues such as: accountability, honesty, integrity, trust, choices, responsibility, anger and especially self-esteem.

After the student has completed their series of seminars then the parents are invited to attend a Parent Seminar and two Parent/Child Seminars. Parent/Child seminars are designed to assist each family in rebuilding the family unit.

Activities

Both on- and off-campus activities provide a proper balance of recreation, exercise, learning, personal development and social opportunities.

Initially all activities are on grounds. Over a period of time students may earn the privilege of participating in off grounds activities.

Growing and Winning

The combination of behavior modification, TASKS, education, emotional growth courses, activities and daily structure assists the kids in making new working choices in their lives.

Working together with our parents, as a team, is a key component to the success of the Program. Families have frequent phone contact with their child's case manager, and when appropriate, the child is included. Communication with the family is instrumental in addressing issues, creating a family purpose and vision, reaching understandings, and setting goals. Commitment to each student and their family is one of the reasons Midwest Academy is so successful.

True re-enactment about a teen who succumbs to the pressures of girl culture, desires to be popular, and ends up a drug user. She then finds the help and support necessary to change her path, regain her self esteem and make working choices in her life. The script for this movie was actually written by the teen who was lost and found her way back. -- To top it all off, she portrays one of the teens in the movie.
