Darrington Academy is a Specialty School, with an excellent academic program, for students ages 14-17 yrs. old. Darrington is located in about one hour north of Atlanta. Its somewhat remote location helps minimize inappropriate distractions, but is still only a day's drive from many of the major cities in the eastern United States.
The main focus of the Darrington program is to help young people build character, acquire self discipline, increase self esteem, gain respect for others, and develop an appreciation for the simplicities in life. During the student's stay at Darrington Academy they and their families are provided with the skills necessary to overcome future hardships by relying on one another for strength and support. At Darrington Academy there is a strong belief that the support of the family unit is the key to a child’s future success academically and as a member of society.
The protocol used in the program has been tried, tested and proven to work. The therapeutic portion of the program is focused on improving self worth and creating happy successful family relationships. As honesty and communication is re-established between the parents and their child, family unity and success become a common goal. This initiates an upward journey toward a better and more rewarding life.
Academics
In addition to having an very successful therapeutic approach, the academic program integrates well with the like skills. Many troubled or difficult teens possess great success potential, but might have struggled in the standard classroom setting due to conduct disorders, disinterest, lack of goals or perhaps focus problems as a result of ADD. At Darrington Academy the computer curriculum allows our certified teachers to spend the majority of their time teaching individual students rather than grading papers, planning lessons, or keeping records. Students with disorders such as ADHD and Dyslexia are able to get the help and attention they need without removing them from the regular classroom and without the stigma associated with many special education and resource programs found in today’s schools.. More advanced students can complete courses on an accelerated basis, while those that progress a little slower can move at a pace consistent with their abilities, and have the assistance of a tutor when needed.
Thus students are never held back by less progressive students or teacher schedules. Each student is assessed upon admission and then assisted in developing a course of study appropriate for them.
Credits earned by students at Darrington are accredited and transfer to the majority of public schools and institutions of higher learning throughout the USA.

Behavior Modification
Darrington Academy will become your teen's home away from home. They will associate with their own small assigned group that becomes their support system and will be assisted by the family support staff member who works specifically with that group. Changing behavior is accomplished in a nurturing way, with a lot of well clarified boundaries. High standards and expectations are established for the kids. Inappropriate behavior is confronted, reprimanded and redirected by suggesting alternative choices. Consequences are assigned, but never include physical or corporal punishment. On the contrary, appropriate behavior is reinforced and rewarded. A merit system is used requiring each student to earn their status and privileges through a standardized program using a system of levels that encourage achievement.
Activities
Both on and off-campus activities provide a nice balance of recreation, exercise, learning, personal development and social opportunities. Initially all activities are on grounds. As a child advances in the program they earn privileges for rewarding off grounds activities. Darrington Academy, being in the Blue Ridge Mountains, has lots of opportunities for summer and winter recreation. Additionally, it is very close to almost 4000 acres worth of State Parks full of rivers and waterfalls. The summer is full of different activities like bike riding, camping and hiking. The winter is also filled with winter sports, inside recreation, and local sporting events.
Personal Development Courses
Students participate daily in tightly-integrated Emotional Growth and Personal Development Courses. These courses effectively utilize resources, such as audio and video tapes, selective reading material, and group feedback sessions. Group feedback sessions are key in this program for developing self-awareness. During these sessions students begin to open up and learn to communicate appropriately. These sessions also address what is or isn't working in their lives. The greatest impact is hearing other kids in their group provide feedback to one another about appropriate or inappropriate behavior. The kids are held accountable for supporting each others positive actions while denying their negative behavior.
TASKS (Teen Accountability, Self-Esteem and Keys to Success)
Students participate in a series of seminars designed specifically for troubled or difficult teens. During the TASKS seminars and work shops, students work on important issues like: accountability, honesty, integrity, trust, making choices, responsibility, anger and most importantly, self-esteem. After a they have completed their series of seminars then the parents are invited to attend a Parent Seminar and two Parent/Child Workshops. The parent/child work shops are designed to assist each family in rebuilding their communication and family harmony.
